Abstract: We present experimental evidence of a two-peaked passage time distribution in a Q-switched single-mode CO2 laser. This novel feature occurs when the initial setting of the net laser gain is close to the threshold value. Population fluctuations with a decay time longer than the transient duration explain this phenomenon.
