Abstract: We investigate the ring pattern characteristic of self-phase modulation in liquid crystals induced by an infrared laser beam focused on a sample of ET An evaluation of the nonlinear refractive-index coefficient (n) over cap (2) is provided. The intensity profile of the ring pattern, calculated by Kirchhoffs diffraction integral, confirms the estimate of (n) over cap (2). (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
