Periodic and chaotic alternation in systems with imperfect O(2) symmetry

Abstract: Recent experiments on an optical oscillator with photorefractive gain have shown that the output field undergoes periodic or chaotic alternations among a small number of patterns. The above features are explained by a dynamical model, based only on symmetry arguments, and hence applicable to a variety of physical situations.
