Abstract: An unusual type of deterministic chaos found in chains of coupled maps is investigated. The unpredictable behaviour, characterized by negative Lyapunov exponents, is shown to be of the same type as that exhibited by deterministic cellular automata. The fact that this form of <> is found to exist in a more realistic class of dynamical models serves as motivation for its identification in physical systems.
