Abstract: Photorefractive two-wave mixing amplification in a Cu-doped KNSBN crystal is extensively characterized through the dependence of the gain and signal to noise ratio on different experimental parameters. A transient enhancement in the amplifier gain is reported and explained in terms of the large pyroelectric effect displayed by KNSBN. The role of beam fanning in determining the optimal experimental conditions is discussed.
