Abstract: We report difference frequency measurements on the spectrum of helium by phase-locking two DBR diode lasers at 1.08 mu m. A mirror terminated extended cavity is used for narrowing the laser linewidth to few hundred kHz. Phase-locking between two narrowed lasers is then achieved up frequency differences of 40 GHz. From the investigation of the 2(3)P helium multiplet we extract a preliminary value for the 2(3)P(0) – 2(3)P(1) fine structure splitting with an accuracy of 25 kHz, corresponding to 9 parts in 10(7).
