Abstract: By using energy balance considerations, we analyze the optogalvanic effect in a cw CO2 laser. On the basis of our thermodynamic treatment, we find that the gas temperature in the discharge tube can be determined by means of this effect. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis.
