Abstract: This communication extends previously reported experimental results of nonlinear refraction and increasing absorption in HgCdTe room-temperature optical bistability: the results obtained by an indirect technique are supported by carefully conducted noncontact direct temperature measurements. Evidence is also provided of important transverse effects at the onset of nonlinear absorption.
