Abstract: A method is described to measure the recession of a blade edge. The experimental set-up includes an industrial microscope to project the blade edge and its specular image onto a photodiode array. The distance between a point on the edge and its specular image is twice the blade recessiion due to wear. A scan is performed over the whole blade and the data are stored and processed with a microcomputer. This particular derection technique allows a fast non-contact automatic inspection independent of the irregularities in the microscope stage translation.
