Thermodynamics of spatiotemporal chaos: an experimental approach

Abstract: We report experimental evidence that, beyond the transition for spatiotemporal chaos, Rayleigh-Bénard convection displays thermodynamic properties in Fourier space. It is shown that a generalized temperature may be defined using the natural fluctuations of the system, and that a suitable free energy accounts for the experimental results.
