Abstract: The FORUMreq (Far-infrared-Outgoing-Radiation Understanding and Monitoring – consolidation of requirements and reference scenarios) project will support the consolidation of the measurement requirements for the FORUM ESA Earth Explorer 9 candidate mission, with the aim of improving the scientific readiness level of the mission
This will be performed by addressing the following objectives:
• Consolidation of the mission requirements by investigating their dependence on the scientific needs for improving the radiative representation of frozen surfaces and atmospheric and cloud fields in climate and NWP models.
• Studying possible modifications of the mission requirements on the basis of technical issues identified during the advancement of the system study. This will allow to make estimation of a trade-off between the mission requirements and the system complexity and finallyto provide the scientific and technical feasibility of the mission.
• Supporting parallel studies by providing on request datasets about selected geophysical and radiance scenarios with the corresponding simulations of the atmospheric and cloud fields.
• Analysing of the scientific performance of the mission in comparison to other space missions providing similar products. This will allow to identify the identification of the observational gaps to be filled with the FORUM measurements and will demonstrate the added value supplied by the proposed coverage of the FIR spectral region for the measurement of atmospheric parameters (OLR spectral, temperature profiles, cirrus microphysics, and surface emissivity) and the retrieval of geophysical variables (water vapour concentration and ice content in clouds).
