Abstract: The present research program is aimed at the development of a photoacoustic microscopy system to be applied to biomedical imaging. In particular, during the first year of research activity, a photoacoustic microscopy system will be designed and developed for the imaging of biological samples based on the coupling of an acoustic detection system to an already existing laser microscopy system. The system will be tested on ex vivo tissue samples to verify their diagnostic potential in histopathology. Then, during the second year of activity, the photoacoustic approach will be implemented in an endoscopic system using a miniaturized transducer, together with an endoscopic laser scanning system. The idea is to engineer a photoacoustic endoscopy system that can be used for diagnostic purposes in various clinical settings, both for diagnostic purposes and for the follow-up of therapies. The research activity will be co-financed by Light4Tech srl, a local company very interested in the development of photoacoustic technology and its possible integration with a scanning laser endoscope currently being developed by the company itself.
