Abstract: By applying the two-pulse technique, the time resolving power of the dark-adapted peripheral retina is found to depend on stimulus wavelength. This contradicts the current idea, according to which, in the low scotopic range, the visual system is univariant. Our findings might be accounted for by suggesting that the temporal coding of the input, at absolute threshold, is mediated by a number of mechanisms with different time constants.
