Abstract: An optical technique is used to digitise the inscription of the Poesia Cave, Italy. The technique is based on the projection of structured light and makes use of algorithms derived from digital interferometry. It allows the recording of the surface shape both with high spatial and out-of-plane resolution. The digitised surface map can be further processed with numerical methods to obtain different visualisations that greatly enhance the legibility of the image. Moreover, the availability of numerical data eliminates the need of handling delicate moulds for study purposes and allows the information to be sent to remote centres by computer network.
