Abstract: The transmission properties of a Fabry-Perot resonator, filled with Na vapor in absence of buffer gas, are systematically examined as the laser frequency is tuned across the D1 line, at different values of temperature and magnetic field. The observed multiple hystereses and symmetry breaking bifurcations are attributed to competition of hyperfine and Zeeman pumping, as the atoms interact with the two counterpropagating waves in the cavity.
