Abstract: From the coupled wave theory the transfer function for phase-reflection holographic gratings is obtained with a view to their application as Fourier filters in the object space. After experimental confirmation, different resonance conditions are presented and suitable approximations are discussed. For resonance at normal incidence, a simplified expression is given for the field complex amplitude transmittance as an explicit function of spatial frequency.
