Abstract: We observed spontaneous hexagon formation in the transverse profile of a continuous-wave laser beam retroreflected by a single planar mirror onto a thin film of nematic liquid crystal. We measured the dependence of the threshold intensity and the spatial period of the pattern on the film-to-mirror distance.
