Abstract: A very large value of the intensity dependent refractive index was measured at 1064 nm with quasi-monomolecular layers of polyDCHD-HS spun on silver-coated plates and was related to the nanostructured surface of the silver films, which provides an electromagnetic mechanism for the enhancement of nonlinearity through local field effects. This point was confirmed in on-resonance (515 nm) and off-resonance (647 nm) SERS experiments. It is suggested that the experimental data can be accounted for by the existence of an interaction between the p-conjugated system of the polymer chain and the silver surface.
